Guns, Germs, and Steel Part 3 (Plant Domestication)

Today in class, we took more notes on guns, germs, and steel. We also took a survey for Mr. Schick's class. Mr. Schick told us that most of the time, you can identify whether an animal is prey or predator by their eyes. If their eyes are closer to the outer edge of their face, they are prey. If there eyes are closer to their nose, they are most likely predators. Prey have their eyes farther apart so that they can see both sides to make sure that a predator isn't near. We also talked about the extra credit on Saturday. To obtain it, you would have to go to the pow wow and take a photo of yourself with something that is related to the event. I am hoping to go at 1:00 after my golf practice. Below are the notes I took today.

  • China, America, and Africa were the first places where people learned to farm. China grew rice. America grew corn, squash, and beans. Africa grew sorghum, millet, and yams.
  • The highlands of New Guinea had problems with farming because they only had sago, bananas, and spiders to eat. Those products aren't necessarily the best products for farming.
  • Geographic luck determines how successful a civilization is.
  • Americans were more successful than the New Guineans because of wheat.
